Chapter Twenty-Eight

‘You should have told me,’ Theo said.

‘I didn’t even think she was on your radar,’ Shilpa said.

‘This isn’t a game. Someone killed Mason Connolly. You can’t go around playing detective.’

‘I thought if I told you or the police I would scare them off. I also thought you’d think I was getting too involved.’

‘You’re correct on both counts,’ Theo said. He stood up from the sofa and walked towards the bi-fold doors that led to the balcony. It was pitch black outside, and Shilpa couldn’t help but wonder if Alison was out there, waiting, watching. She walked over to Theo as he made a call and pulled the curtains shut.

Theo disconnected the call and turned to Shilpa, putting his arms around her. ‘I’ve let Drayton know. There’s a patrol car looking out for her now. We’re locating an address for her, and then another car will go there.’

‘You don’t know where she lives?’ Shilpa pulled away from Theo and sat back down on the sofa. It had been foolish to investigate Mason’s death and meet Alison on her own, but given the police knew less than her, maybe it wasn’t so ridiculous after all. She told Theo her theory again but this time named her suspect.

Theo looked at her as if deciding whether or not she could be trusted. ‘Sod it,’ he said. ‘Why would Alison change after she killed Mason? Why not just leave the knife in the apartment and go? She wasn’t invited, so she would have stood out. She had more of a chance of being seen doing what you say she did.’

‘It’s obvious,’ Shilpa said. ‘She got a kick out of it. Or maybe she was planning to hide the knife somewhere else, but something disturbed her, so she ended up slotting it back in the knife block.’

Theo nodded. His phone rang. He answered it. A few moments later he disconnected and turned to Shilpa. ‘I have to go. I’m sorry,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to leave you alone.’

‘O-of course,’ she stuttered. ‘You go. I’ll be fine. I’ll keep the doors locked.’

‘Have you heard from Tanvi yet?’

She shook her head. ‘It’s late. But maybe she and Jason made up and got a hotel. Although it’s unlike her not to check in.’

‘And Brijesh is out too?’

‘Maybe they’re together,’ she said, although she thought it unlikely.

Theo kissed her on her cheek and headed for the door. ‘Don’t worry. I don’t think Alison is coming for you.’

Shilpa stood up and walked behind Theo. ‘What do you mean? She could be out there.’

Theo opened the door. ‘I don’t think she is,’ he said. He kissed her cheek again and closed the door behind him.
